‘Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity.’ - National Curriculum 2013
Intent
At St Teresa’s we aim to provide an Art and Design curriculum which is engaging and accessible to all our pupils and one where children will learn to observe, explore and experiment, analyse and evaluate. They will develop their skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing and collage and thus become confident in creating their own works of art and design. By developing their understanding of the formal elements of art, pupils will talk confidently about their thoughts and ideas regarding art, artists and their own work. We believe that Art and Design also has an important cross-curricular role in terms of developing transferable skills and it informs and supports learning in other subject areas. It is also a vehicle through which self-esteem, self-awareness and confidence can blossom.
Implementation
Art and Design at St.Teresa’s follows the National Curriculum and is taught termly in conjunction with Design Technology and as we are part of the Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust, we implement their Art and Design Skills and Knowledge Progression Product through the utilisation of units from Kapow’s Art and Design Scheme of Work.
This starts in the Nursery and Reception classes on a yearly cycle alongside planned continuous provision and adult modelled/guided activities which support children’s creative, physical and language development. In Key stages One and Two the subjects are taught in a two year cycle which guarantees children have the opportunity to revisit and refine skills and knowledge they are taught in drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and printing. The formal elements are integrated into each unit ensuring pupils will develop their technical knowledge and vocabulary. This, combined with the study of a range of Artists/works of Art, will allow pupils to engage, analyse and evaluate their own work and the work of others and consider aspects of the creative industries. Pupils will be given opportunities to generate their own ideas, develop their own preferences and review their own work. They will have opportunities to visit Galleries and Museums including accessing galleries online such as the Tate and National Portrait Gallery. Sketchbooks play an important part in pupils learning and go with them as they move up year groups. They use them to practise skills, test-out media, collect information, generate ideas and revisit earlier work: sketchbooks become unique to the individual.
Impact
Through their Art and Design curriculum at St Teresa’s, pupils will be confident in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques and will be able to produce creative work by exploring and recording their ideas and experiences. Pupils will have gained a better knowledge understanding of art and design and its impact and influence in history and culture throughout the world. Children will be able to use subject-specific language to evaluate and analyse creative works and will leave their primary school with a sound base on which to begin their creative learning in Key Stage Three.
