Respect – Resilience – Read – Retain

Respect – we aim to develop a sense of respect for themselves, peers, adults, other faiths and cultures, the environment and the wider world

Resilience – we aim to develop a ‘give it a go’ and ‘its ok to make mistakes’ attitude within our children to prepare them for life beyond school

Read – we believe that reading is the doorway to all learning, we will prioritise the teaching of reading in school

Retain – we aim for our children to know more and remember more, our curriculum design will reinforce and revisit skills and knowledge

Subject Leader - Mr Hillan

Intent

At St Teresa’s, we put Christ at the centre of our work and play. Through our Mission statement we aim to encourage our children to “do the little things well”

We recognise that RE is a core subject and as such is a crucial element of both our curriculum and the life of our school.

Children in St Teresa’s are given opportunities to nurture their understanding that they are a part of a global community; one of which is united through the values of the Gospels. We use this, and the words of Pope Francis as our inspiration to develop an understanding of both staff and children’s role in loving and caring for one another, and for the Earth.

We aim to provide an environment for children and their families to learn about the mission of Christ, and of the church by using scripture, and linking that continuously with everyday life.

Implementation

RE at St Teresa’s School is taught in agreement with the framework approved for use in Catholic schools by the Department of Catholic Education and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. The Come and See document is used from EYFS right up to Year 6. We ensure that 10% of our timetable is given to RE time within each class in the school.

Children are motivated to use skills which allow them to develop knowledge and understanding, make links and connections and learn about beliefs and values. The use of religious and specialist vocabulary is introduced at an early age.

Teachers use a range of strategies and resources to engage children and to ensure that Religious Education is a relevant part of their daily life. The curriculum is mapped out for each year group over a two-year cycle to ensure a thorough coverage of the necessary skills and content.

Impact

As a result of our RE lessons, and the Catholic life of our school, we believe that our children are;

  • Confident, well rounded young people
  • Willing to accept when they have done something wrong and ready to apologise
  • Able to produce good quality work
  • Able to see things from another’s point of view
  • Respectful
  • Understand that they are a part of God’s family
  • Able to “do the little things well.”
