Respect – Resilience – Read – Retain
Respect – we aim to develop a sense of respect for themselves, peers, adults, other faiths and cultures, the environment and the wider world
Resilience – we aim to develop a ‘give it a go’ and ‘its ok to make mistakes’ attitude within our children to prepare them for life beyond school
Read – we believe that reading is the doorway to all learning, we will prioritise the teaching of reading in school
Retain – we aim for our children to know more and remember more, our curriculum design will reinforce and revisit skills and knowledge

Intent
At St. Teresa’s School we work to ensure that children are influencing the future through developing creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently. We aspire to mould our children to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
In Design and Technology, pupils are taught to design, develop, plan and communicate ideas to produce high quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users. They work with existing products, making creative and informed choices along the way. We encourage children to plan, discuss, evaluate and amend their processes and products, giving and receiving constructive advice while working as part of a group or team.
Children should be aware that by making mistakes, we are learning, and therefore should be given opportunities for trial and error. This will build up resilience for other areas of the curriculum, as well as teaching children to experiment with ways to complete tasks.
Implementation
We follow the National Curriculum for DT alongside a strategy from Kapow. Where possible we implement the trust’s planning and assessment guidance. These have been created by a team of Trust primary and secondary specialists.
Our creativity in Design Technology start in the Nursery and Reception classes with carefully planned continuous provision and adult modelled/guided activities which support children’s creative, physical and language development.
In Key Stage One and Key Stage Two at St. Teresa’s, DT is taught termly and follows a two-year cycle. This ensures that children have the opportunity to revisit and refine particular skills they are taught.
The specific teaching of the practical skills in DT using all areas (food, textiles, resistant materials) allows pupils to develop their technical skills and vocabulary. This, combined with the study of specific designers will teach pupils to analyse and evaluate their own work and the work of others and give them the tools with which to discuss and express their thoughts and ideas.
For year 2022-23 we are introducing DT books to show our learning in DT.
Impact
Through their Design and Technology curriculum; St Teresa’s pupils will be more proficient in their planning, designing, making and evaluating. They will have gained a better knowledge of how careful planning makes an easier and smoother make, and that a selective and honest evaluation can help in the future.
Most children will have also developed many other skills which are transferrable to other aspects of life for instance resilience, perseverance, observation and planning and they will leave their primary school with a sound base with which to begin Key Stage Three.
