Intent
At St Teresa’s school, it is our intention to provide all children with a high-quality P.E curriculum which inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging P.E lessons that are enjoyable, challenging, and accessible to all. We believe that opportunities to compete in sport build character and help to embed values such as fairness, tolerance, resilience, and respect. All children are encouraged to join extracurricular clubs to extend their interest and involvement in sport.
Our PE curriculum builds on children’s prior learning and provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health, fitness, and well-being.
We aim for all our pupils from EYS to UKS2:
- to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- to be physically active for sustained periods of time
- to engage in competitive sports and activities
- to lead healthy, active lives
By the end of each key stage our pupils will know, apply, and understand these matters, skills, and processes.
Implementation
As a school in the Bishop Hogarth Trust, we at St Teresa’s are part of the EMS Sport Partnership which enables our children to experience a wide range of sport competitions with children from other schools in addition to regular intra-school competition. Children identified as having a natural talent or passion for a sport are also selected to participate in town events and even Tees Valley competitions and programs. This enables us to challenge even our most able athletes. Our school’s P.E programme aims to ensure that all pupils develop confidence in a range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in a broad range of competitive sports and activities and value the importance of a healthy active lifestyle not only for physical health but also the social and emotional benefits for children in their everyday life.
We teach termly, discreet topics for all pupils from Early Years to Year 6.
The curriculum units of work have clearly identified minimum knowledge ‘end points,’ and have been sequenced to ensure that pupils know more and remember more as they move through primary school and transfer into KS3.
Our curriculum covers the National Curriculum and progression documents have been created and clearly outline objectives that meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. These are emphasised and reinforced in the PE curriculum across our Trust schools from EYFS to KS5.
Topics and units lay out sequential components of learning which equates to 8-10 hours of teaching.
Our Curriculum covers the National Curriculum strands of learning:
In EYFS
Our EYFS offers children the opportunity to be active and interactive. They develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. They begin to with support to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food and drink.
In KS1
- Master basic movements, acquiring and developing skills
- Gymnastics
- Health and fitness
- Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
- Perform dances using simple movements and patterns
- Evaluating and improving
In KS2
- Acquiring and developing skills
- Use running, jumping, throwing, and catching in isolation and combination
- Play competitive games
- Develop flexibility, strength, technique, and control
- Perform dances using a range of movement
- Take part in outdoor and indoor adventurous activities
- Compare performances and demonstrate improvement
In Y3 and Y4 children have weekly swimming lessons where they are taught to:
- swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
- use a range of strokes efficiently
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Each unit of work has a clear rationale, key topic vocabulary, builds on pupil’s prior learning and defines the minimum knowledge and skills (end points) that pupils will learn. Assessment strands in topics give pupils the opportunity to demonstrate their learning and the knowledge companions that we call ‘Learn it! Link It! help pupils to remember the key elements of the topic.

Impact
At St Teresa’s we strive to ensure, our children’s experience of PE is positive, motivating and that it promotes a healthy lifestyle for children as they develop and grow.
When pupils leave our school, pupils will know more, remember more, and understand more about PE. They will have developed qualities such as teamwork, perseverance, communication, and self-control.
The majority of pupil will achieve age related expectations in PE and clear progress will be evident in their lessons and ongoing teacher assessments. Outcomes in PE will demonstrate the pupil’s acquisition of key knowledge and unit, ‘end points.
They will have the firm foundations in PE and will be well placed to make good progress at Key Stage 3.
