Respect – we aim to develop a sense of respect for themselves, peers, adults, other faiths and cultures, the environment and the wider world

Resilience – we aim to develop a ‘give it a go’ and ‘its ok to make mistakes’ attitude within our children to prepare them for life beyond school

Read – we believe that reading is the doorway to all learning, we will prioritise the teaching of reading in school

Retain – we aim for our children to know more and remember more, our curriculum design will reinforce and revisit skills and knowledge

Intent

The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to enable our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. At St. Teresa’s school, we want our children to become more resilient and understand that it is okay to make mistakes, as long we learn from them. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

Implementation

How PSHE is taught at St. Teresa’s:

At St. Teresa’s we deliver the PSHE curriculum by utilising first-hand experience and sharing good practice and through our positive behaviour systems.

We believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education and needs to be taught weekly; although there will also be opportunity to make cross curricular links and these opportunities should not be missed. This enables staff to ensure full coverage of the PSHE scheme of work. There are always occasions where staff may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue which has arisen in their own class.

Staff and children use floor books to record their responses and progress in PSHE sessions.

The delivered curriculum reflects the needs of our pupils and is tailored to meet specific needs. Teachers use the PSHE lessons to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

PSHE is integral to the development of children’s values in order for them to become a positive citizen in a forever changing community.

PSHE is an important part of school assemblies and collective worship were children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.

Our RSHE curriculum is planned, taught and resourced through the recommended Diocesan scheme, Ten:Ten and delivered within our PSHE sessions each half term.

The curriculum is split into five themes for the year:

  • Family & Relationships
  • Safety & the Changing Body
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Citizenship
  • Economic Wellbeing & Transition

The children will meet these themes throughout the course of the year and the themes are built upon as the children move through school.

Impact

Our school values and inclusion of safeguarding within our curriculum is vital as first and foremost, we want our children to be safe and happy so that they can excel in all aspects of school life. Our PSHE curriculum provides them with a chance to reflect and learn about these crucial elements.

Our children and staff value well-being, mental health and good citizenship. Through our curriculum, we believe that we prepare children for the next stage in their education as well as preparing them, during this vital stage of their life, for the adult world.

RSE consultation and Curriculum

In the academic year 2020/21, Relationships Education and Health Education became statutory in all primary schools in England.  This new subject will build on the non-statutory lessons we have previously taught in RSE.

As a Catholic school, our mission is to support the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all of our pupils, rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Church. The education of children in human sexuality is an important, precious and privileged responsibility.  The Church teaches us that this is very much a partnership with parents, in which parents are the ‘first educators’ of their children on these matters; ultimately, you confer on us the right to co-educate your children with you.

St Teresa’s School researched various programmes that were available and under the guidance of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle decided to adopt Life to the Full by Ten Ten Resources. Ten Ten is an award-winning Catholic educational organisation that is well-respected and very experienced in this field of work.

RSE Consultation with parents was carried out in Summer 2021 when this curriculum was implemented and again in Spring Term 2023 by the new headteacher.  Please contact school if you have any questions regarding this curriculum, the option to withdraw your child from the RSE lessons is available to parents however we would ask that you speak to us about this and we can show you the content that the staff will be using. Mrs Bruton will provide parents with a log in so that parents can review the curriculum on offer. As a school we use Life to the Full as a resource and adapt this based on the needs of our children.

Parents of children in Year 5 and 6 are consulted about the puberty presentation that is delivered by the school nurse. This will cover some of the aspects of the Year 5 and Year 6 RSE curriculum, however the children will also be learning about this further in their RSE lessons.
